Zlateh the Goat and Other Stories By Isaac Bashevis Singer
These are the stories, and the images, that defined the Jewish story for me as a kid. In many ways Singer's old-world town of Chelm--full as it is with fools and wisdom, goofy antics and funny mishaps--functions as the single greatest reference point for my own Jewish nostalgia. Singer's first book for children was a masterpiece and no list like this could be complete without this book. No house should be either. It's a great bedtime read-aloud!
