In a little room where a fire is burning, a world-weary rebbe instructs his charges in the alef-beys and life’s hard knocks: “When you get older, children, you will understand that in these letters are the pain and sadness of our people…yes, children, as you carry the burdens of exile and become exhausted, may you gain strength from these letters.” I doubt that hearing this song will make my kids any more eager to go to cheder (Orthodox boys school), but it’s a lovely slice of traditional Jewish life that’s definitely worth sharing with the whole family.
