“Rozhinkes Mit Mandlen” (Raisins and Almonds)
Sung by Pizmon
Parents who have ever imagined their little one growing up to be the next Cornelius Vanderbilt can relate to “Raisins and Almonds.” The song is sung from the perspective of a mother trying to fire up her baby’s ambition to become a successful businessman: “Little Jew, here is your calling–trading in raisins and almonds. So sleep now, little Jew, sleep. There will come a time when railroads will cover half the earth, and you, too, will earn great wealth.” This song was originally written in the 1880s for a Yiddish operetta, and has become a staple in the repertoire of all Yiddish singers.
