Baruch Dayan HaEmet

About a year ago, I wrote to you all with a plea–please help my friend’s baby daughter, Ayelet. I explained that she had a disease that attacks bone marrow, and she desperately needed a transplant. Ayelet did have a transplant, at the end of August, but after months of hospitalization, this morning it proved to not be enough to save her life. As is said, baruch dayan haemet–blessed is the true Judge. My heart is breaking for her family.

As I sat here, wondering how to share this horrible news with the Kveller community, what I kept thinking about was the journey. As soon as Hindy and Seth, Ayelet’s parents, discovered their daughter’s illness, they jumped into action. They found the best specialists and worked their networks to get everyone to get their bone marrow type tested and registered. Their bravery and courage inspired so many, especially through the blog that they started to keep their friends, family, and concerned strangers updated on their daughter’s status. As of this writing, the Ayelet Galena fan page on Facebook has 5,236 followers. Over 1,000 people have written on her wall, expressing their sadness and love to the family. The status update was shared 551 times. If that’s not modern community, I’m not sure what is. I don’t know anyone who is as connected as that little girl was.

I hope you’ll take a minute today to hug your children–and then when they try to pull away–hug them closer. And in Ayelet’s memory, please go to Gift of Life and register for a bone marrow testing kit–just a cheek swab–super easy. If you’d like to take it up a level and make a donation in Ayelet’s memory, Hindy and Seth are asking that you choose either Gift of Life or Cincinnati Children’s Hospital-Bone Marrow Transplant Unit, where Ayelet spent so much time, and was cared for so lovingly.

May they be comforted among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.
