Really, Esquire? I’m 42 & Now You Tell Me I’m Hot?

By at 11:05 am

I am 42.

Many of us have read Tom Junod’s Esquire article, “In Praise of 42-Year-Old Women.” In it, the author declares that 42 is the most alluring age of women this year.

Yay, me! Read the rest of this entry →

I Never Expected Age 40 To Look Like This

By at 2:14 pm

The clock says 8:16 again. While I am sure it is largely coincidence or my imagination, that number is always illuminated regardless of where I am… at home, work, or in my car. 8:16 taunts me, causes my stomach to lurch and my heart to pound because this number represents my birthday: August 16th.

I am struggling with this particular birthday more than any previous year because it has arrived too quickly. I expected to be in a much different place at 40 years of age. Read the rest of this entry →

10 Pros and Cons to Being an Older Mom

By at 11:25 am

For a long time I was an anomaly among my friends. Most were married in their 20s and started their families then. I watched and waited as I went through my days of being single. I did some more waiting and dating while I held babies and changed diapers. This was never easy for me as all I wanted was a partner in life and to have babies of my own. I did not meet my partner in life until I was almost 32 years old. This felt downright elderly in comparison to my group of friends. Married at 33 and a mom at 35 (after a lot of fertility treatments) and you know what? I would not change it for the world.

When I would go to my OB appointments while pregnant, the words “advanced maternal age” was constant. I would laugh as I certainly did not feel “old.” What was even more interesting was my OB told me that I was on the younger side of her practice and that the average age of women seen was 38 years! That blew my mind! While I understood that more women were waiting for various reasons to have children, in my group of friends, this was not the case.

What have I learned (so far) from being an older married woman and an older mom? I’ll first start with the harder parts: Read the rest of this entry →

Birth Control for the Over 40 Set?

By at 5:03 pm

This is ridiculous. I am almost 42 years old and I am having a birth control dilemma. How did THAT happen?!

I got pregnant with my son almost four years ago by batting my eyelashes at my fiancé. Fertile myrtle, right? Not so much.

Secondary infertility set in, and after there were hormones injected into my rump, more dildo-cams than I care to recall, and a two-year stretch of nothing but miscarriages, I got knocked up again. With twins.

I will always wonder if the twins came naturally or from the fertility drug refill that I self-administered, not under a doctor’s care, at half the dose. Some twins do run in my family and AMA (advanced maternal age) also increases the occurrence of twins, so who the hell knows? Or maybe it happened because when I was 10 or so I said I wanted a boy and then twin girls. Cover and simmer for 30 some-odd-years and VOILA, made to order! Read the rest of this entry →
