Chocolate & Sprinkles Covered Ice Cream Cones for Shavuot

It’s going to be a long weekend home with the kids. It’s Memorial Day, but it’s also Shavuot which, for those observing, will completely overtake the weekend. You might need some help occupying the masses, and since it’s traditional to eat dairy on Shavuot, an ice cream sundae bar–complete with chocolate and sprinkles dipped ice cream cones–is just the way to do it.

These fun ice cream cones require no actual cooking, or baking, but are a fun activity to do together and a delicious way to enjoy this double holiday weekend. Get crazy with the toppings, but don’t use anything too heavy (like M&Ms or mini marshmallows) or they will fall right off. Crushed cookies, nuts, toasted coconut, and sprinkles work really well.

Chocolate and Sprinkles Covered Ice Cream Cones, Makes 12 decorated ice cream cones

INGREDIENTS

Store-bought sugar cones

1 ½ cups semi-sweet chocolate chips

1 tbsp vegetable oil

Sprinkles, ground nuts, crushed cookies, toasted coconuts, or other light-weight treats

DIRECTIONS

1. Place a piece of parchment paper on top of a baking sheet and pour sprinkles, chopped cookies, nuts, or shredded coconut into individual bowls for dipping.

2. Place chocolate chips and vegetable oil in a microwave safe bowl. Microwave for 30 second intervals (usually twice), stirring well in between until chocolate is almost totally melted. Then stir vigorously until smooth.

3. Dip cones upside down about an inch into melted chocolate. Allow excess to drip back into bowl. Cover with sprinkles or other items carefully, and then place onto the baking sheet. Repeat with all cones, alternating decorations if desired.

4. Allow to dry completely at room temperature. Top with ice cream and other desired toppings. Store in airtight container for up to three days.
