Dad Explains Why It’s Important for Sons to See Him Doing Nice Things for Ex-Wife

Billy Flynn woke up early to buy flowers, cards, and gifts recently, because he wanted his sons to give them to their mom for her birthday. He then helped them make her breakfast and surprise her. What makes this somewhat unusual is the fact that Flynn and the mother of his two sons are divorced–which makes this family love story even sweeter in many ways.

Flynn recently explained why he often does kind things for his ex-wife in a Facebook post–and why it’s important to do so as an example for his sons:

“I’m raising two little men. The example I set for how I treat their mom is going to significantly shape how they see and treat women and affect their perception of relationships. I think even more so in my case because we are divorced. So if you aren’t modeling good relationship behavior for your kids, get your sh*t together. Rise above it and be an example. This is bigger than you.”

What I personally love about this is the fact that Flynn is promoting love and kindness, regardless of what convention dictates. Divorce is extremely common, so it’s also helpful for kids of divorced families to understand that just because a romantic partnership between parents doesn’t work out, that doesn’t mean you can’t still love and respect each other. Family isn’t just made up of two parents and their children–it’s more nuanced than that.

Flynn went on to say that our kids need more positive examples, stating:

“Raise good men. Raise strong women. Please. The world needs them, now more than ever.”

Can’t argue with that. Read his entire post below:
