Ding-Dong! The AHCA Is Dead (But Let’s Stay Vigilant)

Good riddance to bad rubbish. The heinous, sexist, and unpopular GOP American Health Care Act (AHCA) bill that would have decimated Medicaid and maternity care is dead on arrival. And it’s a “humiliating” defeat, per the New York Times:

“House Republican leaders, facing a revolt among conservatives and moderates in their ranks, pulled legislation to repeal the Affordable Care Act from consideration on the House floor Friday afternoon in a humiliating defeat for President Trump on the first legislative showdown of his presidency.

Paul D. Ryan, the House speaker, rushed to the White House shortly after noon to tell Mr. Trump he did not have the votes for a repeal bill that had been promised for seven years — since the day President Barack Obama signed his landmark health care act into law.”

This is good news for women’s health advocates and oh boy, the jokes about the withdrawal method are taking over Twitter right now.

Let’s breathe a sigh of relief this weekend and but on Monday, let’s remember: the fight to get decent healthcare, including abortion care, maternity and prenatal care, and contraception, continues in an environment that is more hostile than many of us realized. I mean, the fact that prenatal and pediatric care was even on the chopping block to begin with remains scary.

So stay vigilant. The fight continues. How about we start talking about medicare for all and expanded coverage? Anyone? Anyone?
