Sunday Funday for children with special needs at the YM&YWHA of Washington Heights and Inwood. Sunday Funday is an enrichment program that meets on Sunday mornings throughout the academic school year, from September through June. It is designed for children ages 5 through 13, with mild to moderate special needs, including those with autism spectrum disorders, learning differences, communication and language delays, and other related developmental disabilities. With groups that are limited in size, high staff/child ratios, and added supports, the program provides opportunities for children with special needs to participate in activities that they would otherwise not be able to experience. Classes are taught by specialists, who are assisted by counselors with extensive special needs training provided by Ramapo for Children. Sunday Funday offers an array of age and developmentally appropriate activities, including gym and sports, martial arts, music and movement, arts and crafts, drama, and social stories. For an additional fee, there is an option for a Jewish culture elective taking place from 11:30AM-12:30PM. Our goal is to provide fun and enjoyable recreational activities in a safe, supportive, and nurturing environment. The program focuses on building social and communication skills, body awareness, and self esteem, while developing fine and gross motor skills, coordination, and creativity.
