Mayim Bialik: Emmy Noms, Mary Poppins & Other Awesome Things That Happened This Week

I had taken a week off from blogging and social media due to surgery required for my hand, which was injured in a car accident two years ago. I am using voice dictation programs, but this particular post is being dictated to Fancy Assistant Brandon, who, as I said after my accident two years ago, is not only literally my right-hand man, but helps fill in the blanks of my brain as well.

Here are the top five funny/amazing/wonderful things that happened in this past week. I write this with full awareness that the situation in Israel remains critical and this post is not meant in any way to detract from the seriousness and intensity of what is going on in Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza. (Here is the most recent post I wrote about the situation.)

1. The Empire Strikes Back.

I don’t feel like much of a competent mother right now since I am one-handed and generally hobbling about, but thankfully my ex is graciously caring for our sons in ways that I cannot right now. We did do something neat as a family this past week, however. We watched the second installment in the Star Wars saga, Episode 5: “The Empire Strikes Back” (Here’s my post about what it was like watching Episode 4 with my ex and kids). Besides it being, arguably, the best of the entire series of Star Wars movies, it was especially exciting to get to do something with my boys that didn’t involve them staring at me while I sat on the couch and felt sorry for myself. “The Empire Strikes Back” has pretty much all of the most famous lines from Star Wars, as well as the big reveal that Darth Vader is Luke’s father. If you didn’t know that by now, you obviously have not been hanging out at the same park that my kids do.

2. Voice Dictation Gone Awry.

I use a voice dictation program on my HTC phone, as well as on my laptop, and I usually remember to double check before I send things because the dictation program is by no means perfect. The one time I forgot to check, this is what I sent to my friend Lisa:

I’m still pretty and about potatoes and sweating. I also can stay awake terribly late. Let’s see about Shabbat.

I’m completely uncertain about what I was trying to say that came out as, “I’m still pretty and about potatoes and sweating,” but I am certain that what I meant to say was that, “I can’t stay awake terribly late.” Anyhoo, when I realized this typo had been sent to Lisa, I laughed until I cried. She said she assumed it was my dictation program. Good thing.

3. Emmy

I got nominated for my third consecutive Emmy award. I was as shocked, if not more, to get this news as I was last year and the year before. Jim Parsons was also nominated, as was our show, as was our art direction, editing, and tech departments. Bob Newhart was even nominated for his guest spot on our show. It is truly unbelievable to me to be acknowledged this way.

4. 50th Match!

A few years ago, I teamed up with Yeshiva University’s Maccabeats a cappella group to support The Gift of Life Bone Marrow Foundation. Through our website makesomemiracles.com, we have been able to get over 3,000 people to join the bone marrow registry and we have had 49 matches and 14 transplants just from our campaign. This week brought the 50th match and this is an incredibly miraculous and beautiful way to try and improve the world, one small act at a time. As it says in the Talmud, saving one life is like saving the entire world.

5. Mary Poppins.

In yet another attempt to have my sons not watch me sit on the couch and feel sorry for myself, I decided to show them “Mary Poppins,” one of my most favorite movies ever. I don’t tend to like musicals (shocking for someone with my singing and dancing and acting background, I know) but I will never forget playing the role of Jane in my 6th grade drama class’s production of “Mary Poppins” and I simply love it. It is a very long movie and we only got through about two-thirds of it before my ex had to pick the boys up, which apparently, according to my almost 6-year-old turned me very quickly from the best mama in the world to just about the worst. Don’t worry, we will finish it in a few days. And if you don’t believe me, then you have clearly been hanging around my almost 6-year-old too much.

That was my first week of recovery. God only knows what the second week will bring!
