Mayim Bialik’s Hunt for the 2013 Emmys Dress Continues

By at 12:18 pm

mayim bialik emmys searching for dress 2013Have you forgotten it’s Emmy season? Well, I haven’t. Besides being nominated for the second time for a Supporting Actress Emmy, which is still blowing my mind, I couldn’t forget it’s Emmy season if I tried because I have to find a flippin’ dress and I have not found one yet and I don’t really dig this aspect of awards season or life.

It would be an understatement to say that there are more important things going on in the world than this dress, and it’s actually hard to keep writing about dresses with the situation in Egypt, the chemical attacks in Syria, and Chelsea Manning (nee Bradley–wow), but I am an entertainer, and I am part of the complexity of the entertainment world and if you are reading this, in your own way, you are too. And that’s fine. We’re all good.

Mayim at the Emmys: The Dress, the Jewelry, The Hand & More

With TBBT executive producer, Bill Prady.

It’s not new news that I’m moderately fashion-challenged. The search for this year’s Emmy dress, which went incredibly smoothly by all accounts, was still a real challenge for someone who generally wears mostly black, right down to my Converse.

Being nominated for an Emmy, however, required me to allow my stylist and hair and makeup artist and publicist and manager to share and have a vote in decisions from what my dress would look like, what shoes I would wear, what color my nails should be, what jewelry I should wear, and even what purse I should hold on the red carpet. Oh, yeah: we also had to decide what we would do about my injured right hand since I still wear a compression glove and splint everyday.

Here’s how Emmy night shook down. Read the rest of this entry →

Mayim at the Emmys: Pictures and Quotes from the Red Carpet

By at 2:26 pm

mayim bialik emmys 2012 pamela rolland gownMayim had us kvelling this Sunday as she walked the red carpet at the 64th Primetime Emmys.

Over the last couple of weeks Mayim kept us up to date on her dress-search progress and when she finally decided on a gown by Pamella Roland, we knew what color to expect (a deep burgundy) but not how the complete look would come together.

Long story short: it came together beautifully.

The gown was complimented by Mayim’s mezuzah necklace, which was designed for her by North American Jewelers. The layered necklace was finished just days ago with a sapphire and a blood-free diamond. Read the rest of this entry →

The Emmys Dress: I’ll Be Wearing Pamella Roland

By at 11:37 am
Pamella Roland dress Mayim Bialik

This is not my dress, but it is by my designer, Pamella Roland.

The last post I wrote about the search for this year’s Emmy dress was written just before a little thing happened that we can heretofore call my horrible, horrible car accident. The days after my accident were spent negotiating pain, recovering from surgery, returning to work, and also wondering what was I going to do about my Emmy dress with my right hand in the sorry state it’s in. At that time, Ali and I were 99% sure of the dress.

Almost a month after the accident, my hand is still extremely unpleasing to the eye in its ungloved, unprotected form and my hand therapist has agreed to try and give me a black compression glove, sleeve, splint, or combination of those.

We have decided to forge ahead and convert our 99% certainty to 100% certainty. I think it’s safe to announce that the designer of my Emmy gown is Pamella Roland. We have made a few modifications to the dress, given the state of my hand and forearm and general Mayim-ness.

1. Sleeves: We modified the sleeves from the original design of the dress so that, if need be, the fact that the sleeve may not close around my wrist will not be easily noticed.

2. Color: We changed our color choice from slate blue to a deep, dark burgundy. Although they do not make hand splints and compression gloves in deep, dark burgundy, I will feel less self conscious having a black hand contraption blend in with deep, dark burgundy, than with any of the other colors we considered.

3. NeckwearThe mezuzah, which North American Jewelers is designing for me to wear on the red carpet, originally featured a sapphire to go with the slate blue. Tempted as I was to change the sapphire to a garnet or ruby, Ali and my husband both rolled their eyes and said that that was “too mitchy-matchy.” As it stands, the mezuzah will feature a sapphire and an “unblood” small diamond (more on that next week).

4. Neckline: The dress plunged more into the cleavage arena than I am comfortable with, so we lifted it to a more tzinus (modest) level. I guess you could say that the dress is now closer to God. Ha ha ha.

Without giving away too many details besides the fact that it’s deep, dark burgundy, it is very long, it has a loop that goes around your index finger to hold up the train when you walk (I feel like I should have one of those medieval princess cone hats on when I loop it through my finger), and it shows off my curves in a hopefully appropriate way.

RECAP

Dress: 100% no turning back. Thank you, Pamella Roland. Thank you, deep, dark burgundy. Thank you, Jorge the tailor.

Necklace: 100% almost done. No mitchy-matchy red stone. Just a sapphire and a happy diamond.

Mood: Furrowed brow attributed solely to the pain of my injury and recovery. Otherwise, pretty darn content.

The Emmys Dress: Making This as Easy as Possible

By at 2:30 pm

mayim bialik emmys 2011 black dressThe search for this year’s Emmy dress is already going much smoother than last year’s search.

One reason is that I have a stylist named Ali who I really like, who understands me and my fashion needs, and who isn’t afraid to be honest with me. She’s also not freaked out by all of my weird Jewish modesty clothing issues. As I described in my last post about the search for my Emmy dress, I sent my stylist some images of classic Hollywood dresses, classic paintings depicting dresses I like, and pictures of Hollywood actresses in dresses I like. Then, I waited.

Getting Ready for the Emmys with Mayim Bialik

Inspiration for my dress: John Singer Sargent's Lady Agnew

After the initial hysteria about my Emmy nomination abated and after my parents stopped crying with joy and after I returned from Atlanta, which is where I was when I found out I got nominated, my thoughts turned to the practicalities of Emmy night. Namely, what was I going to wear?

Last year I wrote a very in depth four-part series entitled Operation Hot and Holy, detailing my search for a tznius (modest) Emmy dress. When all was said and done, I ended up with a dress that I loved last year, but as my set of essays described, the journey there was long, complicated, and full of dresses that revealed more of me than I prefer to.

This year, I have a stylist I love, a nomination to my name, and hopefully the search will be easier. Here’s where we’re at dress-wise. Read the rest of this entry →
