Mayim Bialik: My Night at the Emmys in Photos

By at 1:07 pm

1. Getting ready with Robert Ramos, who does my hair (his assistant Lorena took the picture). Yes, I am wearing a Star Wars T-shirt. We ordered vegan Thai Iced Teas and listened to Neko Case’s “Fox Confessor Brings the Flood” and “Blacklisted” albums. Fancy Assistant Brandon and I did some emailing catch up and then he left us all to finish getting me ready.

2. Team Mayim: Robert again, make up artist Linda Cowan (who worked on “Blossom” and also does my make-up on TBBT), and stylist Ja-Niya Walker (who also styled my Cliche magazine shoot and styles me for “Candid Camera”). The sheet on the floor is because my house is under major construction and not only did we get me ready on a dusty dust-coated floor (hence the sheet I am standing on), the demolition of an entire bathroom literally above our heads went on for the entire three and a half hours we were getting me ready. The whole team agreed that it was the most unusual preparation for an awards show they had ever participated in. Read the rest of this entry →

Mayim Bialik: I Took My Sons to my Final Emmy Dress Fitting & This is What Happened

By at 11:09 am

Mayim-fitting-final-2

My final Emmy dress fitting with Oliver Tolentino went fantastic. Truly. He saved the day and the week swinging into action at the last minute. Phew.

You will all get to see it in a matter of hours but I need to tell you the highlights of this fitting because I had my sons with me.

My sons are 6 and almost 9. They don’t like doing any chores with Mama. They like playing LEGO and begging me to show them movies since now that’s something we do sometimes. They like getting annoyed with me when I won’t give them more than three jelly beans at a time. They like swimming and playing ball in the house. They do not like watching me try on dresses for award shows they don’t care about and won’t be seeing. Read the rest of this entry →

Mayim Bialik: A Nice Surprise at My Emmys Dress Fitting

By at 12:53 pm

Mayim-Fitting

As I discussed last week, despite the troubling and distracting events in Israel and the Gaza Strip, I will be posting a once-a-week update on all things Emmy leading up to the Emmy awards, which will be held August 25th.

Last week, I discussed how we had chosen a very unusual color for the dress, which I will not be telling anyone about before you see it on the red carpet. I also discussed how the dress is very simple, but has some crazy sleeves and sparkly action.

All of that is still true.  Read the rest of this entry →

Mayim Bialik: The Emmy Awards Are Coming & I Need a Dress!

By at 1:27 pm

Mayim-emmys-third-time

With all of the Israel news this past month, I almost forgot that the Emmys are coming up and that I’m nominated. I knew they were on the horizon, but all of a sudden, they are less than a month away! Eeeeek!

I have decided to do a post a week about the Emmy goings-on to keep you updated about the dress, the jewelry, the shoes, and all of the appropriate insights I may (or may not) have. This is not to detract from the serious events going on in Israel, Syria, Iraq, or anywhere else, but I know there has been interest in the past in my Emmy journey so I will continue to write about it!

It’s very exciting and it’s a huge honor to be nominated. I have waxed poetic here for the past three years about how humbling and unbelievable it is to me–the grandchild of Eastern European immigrants–that I am nominated for the highest award in my industry. Every year I have been nominated has knocked me on my proverbial tuchus–I really can’t believe it. Read the rest of this entry →

Mayim Bialik’s Hunt for the 2013 Emmys Dress Continues

By at 12:18 pm

mayim bialik emmys searching for dress 2013Have you forgotten it’s Emmy season? Well, I haven’t. Besides being nominated for the second time for a Supporting Actress Emmy, which is still blowing my mind, I couldn’t forget it’s Emmy season if I tried because I have to find a flippin’ dress and I have not found one yet and I don’t really dig this aspect of awards season or life.

It would be an understatement to say that there are more important things going on in the world than this dress, and it’s actually hard to keep writing about dresses with the situation in Egypt, the chemical attacks in Syria, and Chelsea Manning (nee Bradley–wow), but I am an entertainer, and I am part of the complexity of the entertainment world and if you are reading this, in your own way, you are too. And that’s fine. We’re all good.

So. Read the rest of this entry →

Mayim at the Emmys: The Dress, the Jewelry, The Hand & More

By at 2:54 pm
mayim bialik and bill prady emmys 2012

With TBBT executive producer, Bill Prady.

It’s not new news that I’m moderately fashion-challenged. The search for this year’s Emmy dress, which went incredibly smoothly by all accounts, was still a real challenge for someone who generally wears mostly black, right down to my Converse.

Being nominated for an Emmy, however, required me to allow my stylist and hair and makeup artist and publicist and manager to share and have a vote in decisions from what my dress would look like, what shoes I would wear, what color my nails should be, what jewelry I should wear, and even what purse I should hold on the red carpet. Oh, yeah: we also had to decide what we would do about my injured right hand since I still wear a compression glove and splint everyday.

Here’s how Emmy night shook down. Read the rest of this entry →

Mayim at the Emmys: Pictures and Quotes from the Red Carpet

By at 2:26 pm

mayim bialik emmys 2012 pamela rolland gownMayim had us kvelling this Sunday as she walked the red carpet at the 64th Primetime Emmys.

Over the last couple of weeks Mayim kept us up to date on her dress-search progress and when she finally decided on a gown by Pamella Roland, we knew what color to expect (a deep burgundy) but not how the complete look would come together.

Long story short: it came together beautifully.

The gown was complimented by Mayim’s mezuzah necklace, which was designed for her by North American Jewelers. The layered necklace was finished just days ago with a sapphire and a blood-free diamond. Read the rest of this entry →

The Emmys Dress: I’ll Be Wearing Pamella Roland

By at 11:37 am
Pamella Roland dress Mayim Bialik

This is not my dress, but it is by my designer, Pamella Roland.

The last post I wrote about the search for this year’s Emmy dress was written just before a little thing happened that we can heretofore call my horrible, horrible car accident. The days after my accident were spent negotiating pain, recovering from surgery, returning to work, and also wondering what was I going to do about my Emmy dress with my right hand in the sorry state it’s in. At that time, Ali and I were 99% sure of the dress.

Almost a month after the accident, my hand is still extremely unpleasing to the eye in its ungloved, unprotected form and my hand therapist has agreed to try and give me a black compression glove, sleeve, splint, or combination of those.

We have decided to forge ahead and convert our 99% certainty to 100% certainty. I think it’s safe to announce that the designer of my Emmy gown is Pamella Roland. We have made a few modifications to the dress, given the state of my hand and forearm and general Mayim-ness.

1. Sleeves: We modified the sleeves from the original design of the dress so that, if need be, the fact that the sleeve may not close around my wrist will not be easily noticed.

2. Color: We changed our color choice from slate blue to a deep, dark burgundy. Although they do not make hand splints and compression gloves in deep, dark burgundy, I will feel less self conscious having a black hand contraption blend in with deep, dark burgundy, than with any of the other colors we considered.

3. NeckwearThe mezuzah, which North American Jewelers is designing for me to wear on the red carpet, originally featured a sapphire to go with the slate blue. Tempted as I was to change the sapphire to a garnet or ruby, Ali and my husband both rolled their eyes and said that that was “too mitchy-matchy.” As it stands, the mezuzah will feature a sapphire and an “unblood” small diamond (more on that next week).

4. Neckline: The dress plunged more into the cleavage arena than I am comfortable with, so we lifted it to a more tzinus (modest) level. I guess you could say that the dress is now closer to God. Ha ha ha.

Without giving away too many details besides the fact that it’s deep, dark burgundy, it is very long, it has a loop that goes around your index finger to hold up the train when you walk (I feel like I should have one of those medieval princess cone hats on when I loop it through my finger), and it shows off my curves in a hopefully appropriate way.

RECAP

Dress: 100% no turning back. Thank you, Pamella Roland. Thank you, deep, dark burgundy. Thank you, Jorge the tailor.

Necklace: 100% almost done. No mitchy-matchy red stone. Just a sapphire and a happy diamond.

Mood: Furrowed brow attributed solely to the pain of my injury and recovery. Otherwise, pretty darn content.

The Emmys Dress: Making This as Easy as Possible

By at 2:30 pm

mayim bialik emmys 2011 black dressThe search for this year’s Emmy dress is already going much smoother than last year’s search.

One reason is that I have a stylist named Ali who I really like, who understands me and my fashion needs, and who isn’t afraid to be honest with me. She’s also not freaked out by all of my weird Jewish modesty clothing issues. As I described in my last post about the search for my Emmy dress, I sent my stylist some images of classic Hollywood dresses, classic paintings depicting dresses I like, and pictures of Hollywood actresses in dresses I like. Then, I waited.
