Mayim Bialik: Emmy Noms, Mary Poppins & Other Awesome Things That Happened This Week

By at 11:20 am

Mayim bialik red carpet look

I had taken a week off from blogging and social media due to surgery required for my hand, which was injured in a car accident two years ago. I am using voice dictation programs, but this particular post is being dictated to Fancy Assistant Brandon, who, as I said after my accident two years ago, is not only literally my right-hand man, but helps fill in the blanks of my brain as well.

Here are the top five funny/amazing/wonderful things that happened in this past week. I write this with full awareness that the situation in Israel remains critical and this post is not meant in any way to detract from the seriousness and intensity of what is going on in Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza. (Here is the most recent post I wrote about the situation.)

What Mayim Bialik’s Sons Thought of Her (And Everybody Else’s) Emmys Look

By at 12:22 pm

mayim bialik emmys 2013 close upThe 2013 Emmys are a week behind us, and their impact has abated but not subsided. I am still getting a lot of “Sorry you lost!” comments and emails and such, as well as lots of “I loved your dress!” comments and emails and such.

Neither I nor my boys’ father reminded them it was the Emmys last weekend. Sure, they knew I was nominated, but beyond that day when I found out while we were in San Jose and had vegan doughnuts to celebrate, I don’t think they thought too much about it.

This past weekend, though, I mentioned that I wanted their thoughts on my Emmy dress for a Kveller post. My older son who is almost 8 asked, “Did you win the Emmy?”

“No,” I replied. Read the rest of this entry →

Mayim Bialik: Top 10 Moments from the 2013 Emmy Awards

By at 12:20 pm

mayim bialik emmys 2013 eating popcorn1. Losing Team. Let’s just get it out of the way right now: losing sucks. I am a fiercely competitive person about everything from how fast I can run up a flight of stairs to how much someone loves me. Since I was a very small child, I wanted to win all things and be the best at everything and if not, challenge myself to try to be the best by beating myself up for not being the best. So, yeah: losing sucks. I am happy for Merritt Weaver and sure, being nominated makes me a winner, except when it doesn’t because I lost. I am fine, I am OK. I’m not broken, just bent. And I will learn to love again.

2. Eating. Because I am a vegan, eating is often hard at fancy Hollywood parties. I did a smart thing this weekend, though. I attended an awesome PETA event where I could eat literally anything there! Here is the vegan mac n cheez I ate and some of the adorable beautiful animal-cruelty free desserts they had. Yay for PETA. And for feeding me to help metabolize some of the drinks I had that night! Read the rest of this entry →

Mayim Bialik: One Last Emmys Update Before the Big Day

By at 11:43 am

mayim bialik emmys 2012 kvellerWell, folks, the Emmys are this Sunday. Since Sukkot starts tonight at sundown, I (and Kveller.com) will be off the grid Thursday and Friday. That means that the next you will hear from me is from the Emmys (if I can get reception to tweet!) and then after the Emmys.

Here is how it’s shaping up.

I kicked off Emmy week with the Audi and Altuzarra Pre-Emmy party in West Hollywood (for pictures from the event, click here and here). Since I drive an Audi A4 and am totally in love with it, I was thrilled to celebrate in the Audi spirit. Even the bartenders’ aprons had the Audi logo on them! Read the rest of this entry →

Mayim Bialik Emmys Update: The Dress, The Shoes, The Sanity

By at 11:55 am

mayim bialik emmy dress update 2013As the countdown to the Emmys nears, it’s time for an Emmy outfit update. Heads up: Sukkot starts the Wednesday night before the Emmys, so once yontif (holiday) begins, you won’t hear from me again until after the Emmys! Here’s your update for the week before the week before the Emmys!

Oliver Tolentino and his crew are happily crafting my custom gown and I had a second fitting for it this week. I had lost weight which makes no sense since I literally approached Rosh Hashanah as if preparing for a famine, God forbid, or an ultra-marathon. I ate like it was my full-time vocation. And yet I lost weight. Maybe my stomach thought it was Opposite Day.

Onto the update. Read the rest of this entry →

Top 5 Things On My Mind This Rosh Hashanah

By at 10:53 am

mayim bialik rosh hashanah 2013The Jewish New Year is upon us. I don’t know about you, but the High Holidays really snuck up on me this year. Perhaps because they came a month earlier than usual (our lunar calendar is due for the solar correction of an extra month next year), or perhaps because this has been such a big year for me full of changes and busyness; I don’t know. They just snuck up on me.

That being said, here are the Top 5 Things On My Mind this Rosh Hashanah. Some are Rosh Hashanah-related, some are not.

1. My first son was born between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur and bears the middle name “Rosh” in Hebrew because of that. Every year since I was pregnant with him, I make a plum cobbler with plums from my mother-in-law’s plum tree and freeze it to eat on his birthday. This year, because of the Jewish calendar being so early, his Hebrew birthday falls about five weeks before his secular one. Read the rest of this entry →

Mayim Bialik’s Hunt for the 2013 Emmys Dress Continues

By at 12:18 pm

mayim bialik emmys searching for dress 2013Have you forgotten it’s Emmy season? Well, I haven’t. Besides being nominated for the second time for a Supporting Actress Emmy, which is still blowing my mind, I couldn’t forget it’s Emmy season if I tried because I have to find a flippin’ dress and I have not found one yet and I don’t really dig this aspect of awards season or life.

It would be an understatement to say that there are more important things going on in the world than this dress, and it’s actually hard to keep writing about dresses with the situation in Egypt, the chemical attacks in Syria, and Chelsea Manning (nee Bradley–wow), but I am an entertainer, and I am part of the complexity of the entertainment world and if you are reading this, in your own way, you are too. And that’s fine. We’re all good.

Heading Back to Work on Season 7 of The Big Bang Theory

By at 1:59 pm

mayim bialik on big bang theory season 6The Big Bang Theory” went back into production this week on our seventh season. Although I have only been a regular cast member since season four, I feel a huge part of this amazing cast and show, especially as we head into this new season nominated for an Outstanding Comedy Emmy.

What does it look like when I go back to work? Well, it’s a lot like the first day back at school. I am excited to see my friends and co-workers, and our staff and crew, and I am also a little nervous… It’s a lot of hugging and catching up and smiling and chit-chatting and I’m not the most socially smooth person. Mayim Bialik on Getting Ready for the 2013 Emmys

By at 1:58 pm

mayim bialik nominated for second consecutive emmy 2013As many of you know, I received my second Emmy nomination a few weeks ago for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy for my work on “The Big Bang Theory.” It’s been very exciting, even–especially!?–the second time around. It means lots of interviews, lots of excitement for our show, which was also nominated, my co-nominee Jim Parsons, who was also nominated, and it’s just crazy exciting all over town.

It also means something that many women love to think about but which I famously don’t: finding a dress. And getting dressed up like a princess. And hair being styled and make-up being done and jewelry being selected and shoes and a purse and blah blah blah blah. None of that stuff thrills me. I am a tomboy, I am grumpy, I have not had a manicure in maybe 10 years, I don’t like pampering, and I hate sitting in one place for more than five minutes.

Anyway. Read the rest of this entry →
