Television’s O.G. animated Jewish family is making a comeback: Nickelodeon announced that Rugrats will be returning with new episodes — and a movie! — very soon.
Rugrats ran for 172 episodes from 1991 to 2004. There were also three movies — The Rugrats Movie, Rugrats in Paris: The Movie, and Rugrats Go Wild — plus some very memorable TV specials, including A Rugrats Chanukah and A Rugrats Passover (which actually does a great job of explaining the Passover story).
The iconic animated series will return with 26 new episodes, as well as a movie described as “live-action film featuring CGI characters” that’s set to premiere in November 2020. (We’re a little dubious about CGI babies, to be honest — as Vulture headlined their story on the reboot, “CGI Rugrats Are Coming to Haunt Your Dreams.” )
However, we trust the television reboot will at least capture the original tone and feel of the original, because the show’s original creators — Arlene Klasky, Gábor Csupó, and Paul Germain — are returning to the reboot.
Sarah Levy, interim Nickelodeon president, said in a statement, “Rugrats is hands-down one of the most celebrated cartoons in TV history, and we are thrilled for a whole new audience to meet these iconic characters in brand-new adventures. What was true in 1991 when the original show premiered is still true today: Kids are fascinated with the world of babies. We can’t wait for today’s kids to meet Tommy, Chuckie and pals.”
As Rolling Stone reports, “Nickelodeon has been a nostalgic kick lately, bringing back Nineties series like Double Dare, Rocko’s Modern Life and, potentially, Clarissa Explains It All.”
Still, some on Twitter are worried the reboot will ruin the original.

At Kveller, however, we’re all very excited. Will the Tommy, Chuckie, Phil, Lil, Susie, and Angelica be all grown up? (Can we pretend like Rugrats All Grown Up never happened?) Will they do a special episode for Rosh Hashanah?
