Emma is like many other 10-year-old girls who like to play with dolls. Recently, however, she got a huge surprise: Her family, who lives in Texas, surprised her with a doll that has a prosthetic leg just like she does.
So, how where did the doll actually come from? It was made at A Step Ahead Prosthetics, a New York–based prosthetics company that also customizes American Girl dolls to fit them with prosthetic limbs. Apparently, they customize the dolls at no charge “to anyone who wants to send one,” according to BuzzFeed. Daniel Klepner, a spokesperson for the company, stated:
“We fabricate each doll prosthesis here in our shop alongside the ‘real’ prosthetics that we make for our patients, and we paint each one by hand.
[The dolls] can have a profound effect on the self-esteem and sense of inclusion of kids with limb loss.”
Of course, Klepner is absolutely right–and Emma’s priceless reaction is hard evidence. When she opens the box the doll is in, she can’t help but burst out saying: “You gotta be kidding me! It’s got a leg like me!”
