In 2019, the Naama Issaschar affair made big headlines in Israel — when a young Israeli-American woman was detained in Russia under charges of drug smuggling. In 2022, NBA player Brittney Griner made even bigger headlines after she was arrested under similar charges while playing in Russia during the offseason.

A new Israeli thriller series borrows from both these stories and takes them to a new extreme, telling the tale of a young Israeli woman detained in Russia, accused of drug smuggling — and the determined mother trying to move worlds to get her daughter back, all while uncovering a “deadly web and corruption,” according to the series’ synopsis.

“Unconditional” is premiering on Apple TV this May. It comes from creators Adam Bizanski, known for directing music videos for The Shins and Zero 7 and for the Israeli show “Magpie,” and Dana Idisis, who c0-created “On the Spectrum,” which was adapted by Prime Video into a show titled “As We See It.” The show is directed by Johnathan Gurfinkel (“Six Acts”).

It stars Talia Lynne Ronn in her debut TV as Gali, 23, and Liraz Chamami (“Bad Boy”) as her mother, Orna. The pair are returning from a trip to India when the 23-year-old gets arrested for allegedly smuggling drugs into Moscow. With Gali behind bars, Orna goes on an arduous journey, making pleading media appearances and investigating every possible lead to help bring her daughter back home, as Russian authorities ask for Gali to spend 18 years in jail for her crime.

The show also stars singer Amir Haddad (known by his stage name, Amir), Yossi Marshek, who previously starred in Apple TV’s “Losing Alice,” celebrated theater and TV actress Evgenia Dodina (“Invisible,” “Virgins”) who is seen in the trailer telling Orna that her daughter has been taken because she knew “something critical for Israeli National Security,” and Vladimir Friedman (“Bad Boy”).

“Unconditional” is making its global debut on Apple TV with the first two episodes on Friday, May 8, with new episodes airing every Friday through June 19.
