This week, Deadline reported that the film “Mazel Tough,” a romantic comedy “set against the backdrop of modern dating through the lens of the Jewish community” will begin filming in October.
A rom-com about Jewish dating? Yes, please!
According to IMDB, the film will follow a Jewish man named Michael (Alex Rich of “The Patient,” “Glow” and “Genius”) who “looks everywhere for the perfect Jewish girl through his quarter-life crisis and holiday gatherings as everyone around him gets swept off their feet.”
A holiday rom-com about Jewish dating? Say less!
Other confirmed cast members include Michael Vlamis (“Roswell, New Mexico”), Colin Ford (“We Bought a Zoo”), Sofia Masson (“Waltzing With Brando”), Adam Shapiro (“Never Have I Ever,” “The Bear”), and Jonathan Lipnicki — yes, the man formerly known as the kid from Jerry Maguire, who is an actor and executive producer at Buffalo 8, the studio producing “Mazel Tough.”
In a statement, Lipnicki and his Buffalo 8 colleague Adam Harris Engelhard said, “Since meeting, we’ve been looking for the right Jewish film to champion, and ‘Mazel Tough’ immediately felt like that opportunity.”
“Mazel Tough” will be the first feature film for its writer and director, Evan Scolnick, but it won’t be his first Jewish project. He was an editor on his brother (and lifelong collaborator) Justin Scolnick’s NYU thesis project, a 2026 short film titled “Die By The Schtic,” about a man trying to fulfill his late brother’s shiva requests.
And as if “Mazel Tough” didn’t already sound Jewish enough, we do need you to know that the first comment on the Deadline article breaking the news about the film appears to be from actor Adam Shapiro’s grandmother, who writes “Very proud ofU, real success, hard working achieving ur dreams, grandmami.”
