A lot of Christmas songs were written by Jews, except for, arguably, the best one: Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas.”
But that didn’t stop singer Maskit Mati from filming an adorable Hanukkah parody of the song in which she sings that she doesn’t care “about the donuts under the hanukkiah” because “all I want for Hanukkah is you,” with impressive vocals and theatrical flair.
Mati, who hails from Australia but lives in New York City, filmed the video in the city’s iconic and oh-so-crowded Times Square with the billboards illuminating the shots like Hanukkah candles.
As she spins around the busy square, she slowly takes off her red coat and scarf to reveal a Hanukkah sweater that says “Happy Hanukkah, Ya Filthy Schmuck” (available on TeePublic, of course) and runs around the tourist destination. Aside from her twirling around the New York locale, there are also shots of dreidels spinning, plump sufganiyot, and a menorah being lit.
It’s truly a whole lot of Hanukkah light and fun.
The video isn’t Mati’s only Hanukkah parody. She also shared her version of “It’s Beginning To Look a Lot Like Christmas,” which she turned into — you guessed it! — “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Hanukkah.”
She sings about the signs that the Festival of Lights is around the corner, like “jam donuts in every store.” She urges revelers to “take a look at the five and ten, it’s glistening once again with chocolate coins and silver lanes aglow” and stresses that “the prettiest sign to see is a hanukkiah that will be on your own window.”
We couldn’t agree more! We can’t get enough of these sweet Hanukkah covers. Keep them coming, Maskit!
