New Jersey Sleepaway Camps: One-Day & Overnight Experiences for First-Time Campers

Looking to have your child get a taste of overnight camp, but not sure they are ready for a full session? We have rounded up a list of camp experiences at overnight camps serving families in the Greater MetroWest New Jersey area which includes Essex, Morris, Union, Somerset, and Sussex Counties. They will give you the best parts of camp life in one day, one weekend, or one week (or sometimes two). In all cases, be sure to make your plans and register for these camp experiences as soon as possible; there is limited space available and programs book up early. Rookie Days

These one-day experiences give prospective campers a taste of camp life including camp activities, meeting peers, and sampling camp cuisine.

Camp Zeke – Open House
Explore the 500-acre camp including the fitness and cooking facilities, meet staff and both new and returning families. RSVP requested.

Camp Harlam Rookie Day
Rookie campers will ride a bus into camp accompanied by a counselor and song leader and then experience a jam-packed day of camp fun. Parents (after dropping kids off at the bus stop near camp) will meet up at 2:30 p.m. for a tour and Q&A session with camp directors. Advance registration requested, for prospective campers going into grades 2 – 5.

Rookie Camps

If you want more than a day-long visit, but aren’t quite ready to commit for an entire month, a rookie camp experience might just be the thing for your camper-to-be. Some programs are three days and two nights and some go as long as a week, but all of them give participants the opportunity to live, eat, and breathe camp.
