Get Crafty With Us: DIY Hanukkah

Kveller editor Deborah’s daughter crafting up a menorah.

Hanukkah is almost here! It’s time to dust off the menorahs, locate your dreidels, and buy about a ton of potatoes and Hanukkah gelt. If you’re loooking for more ways to get in the Hanukkah spirit, this is the perfect DIY decoration holiday–and your kids can join in on the fun!

We want to know how your family is preparing for the coming eight days. If you have pictures of your kids making Hanukkah crafts, share them on our Facebook page or send them to info@kveller.com.

If you aren’t sure where to start, or are looking for some creative projects for your kids to work on, check some of our favorite ideas below.

Kveller contributor Joanna Brichetto has a bunch of great ideas on her personal blog, including this fantastic swim noodle menorah. If you’re planning on spending the holiday somewhere hot, this makes the perfect decoration.

For an alternative menorah craft, consider trying out Tali Buchler’s homemade menorah. Using average items from your own arts and crafts chest (plus a few new materials), your children can create and decorate a movable menorah that can be used again and again.

Joanna also has a creative solution for how to use your child’s record-breaking lego collection. Her DIY Lego dreidel kits are a great way to utilize something we all have around the house. Once you master the art, you could even give away small packages of Legos with all the right pieces for dreidels.

Over at Design Megillah, Rita shares how to turn all that chocolate gelt into very classy looking decor. It’s too pretty to eat (almost).

Our friend Sara Rivka over at Creative Jewish Mom also has some great ideas, like these Hanukkah-themed sun catchers made with pony beads.

Finally the only thing better than being able to eat your winnings is also being able to eat the dreidel! Joanna offers this delectable edible dreidel recipe, however many more are available online including this caramel-covered dreidel delight.

We want to know if you try out any of these Hanukkah craft ideas, and let us know if you have more fun ideas!
