Jewish actress Natalie Portman, born Natalie Hershlag in Israel, has two kids with beautiful names — son Aleph, 14, named after that first letter of the Hebrew alphabet, and daughter Amalia, 9, a gorgeous name that means God’s labor in Hebrew.
Now, she’s going to have to find another beautiful Hebrew “A” name (or perhaps, go with the third Hebrew letter gimmel?), as she’s expecting her third child, her first with partner Tanguy Destable.
The actor and model discussed the news with Harper’s Bazaar.
“Tanguy and I are very excited,” she told the magazine. “I’m just very grateful. I know it’s such a privilege and a miracle.”
The daughter of Avner Hershlag, a gynecologist and fertility specialist (she once told her preschool teachers that her dad “helps women get pregnant”), said she grew up “hearing about how hard it is to get pregnant… I have so many people I love who’ve had such a hard time with it that I want to be respectful around that as well. It’s such a beautiful, joyous thing, and it’s also not an easy thing. And so I know how lucky it is. I’m very aware, and I’m very grateful. I have deep appreciation and gratitude.”
The 44-year-old said she is feeling well, working out, spending time with her kids, craving fruit and excited to spend some time just enjoying being pregnant in the French spring. The actress recently finished work on several projects, including the upcoming 2027 Lena Dunham film “Good Sex.”
Like Portman, the France-born and raised Destable, who goes by the stage name Tepr, is also fairly recently separated. He has two children with actress Louise Bourgoin, and the two broke up in 2023. Portman was previously married to French choreographer Benjamin Millepied, the father of her two children who she met on the set of “Black Swan.” Millepied is rumored to have cheated on her, spurring their 2023 separation and 2024 divorce.
We wish Portman a very heartfelt b’sha’ah tovah — and if it helps, we do have plenty of “A” names in our Jewish baby name bank!
Can we ask? Keep Jewish joy accessible to all. Reader donations help us do just that. Can you help us meet our year-end goals? (We'll love you forever.)
