Passover starts on the evening of April 1 this year. That’s just 23 days before the premiere of “Michael,” a new Michael Jackson biopic starring the singer’s nephew, Jaafar Jackson, as Jackson (and Jewish queen Kat Graham as Diana Ross), and beloved Jewish a cappella group Six13 couldn’t be more ready.
They’ve released a Michael Jackson Passover parody mash-up that would make the late singer moonwalk with pride. There’s a “Billie Jean” parody about Bubbe Jeanne at the seder. Of course, “Wanna Be Startin’ Something” is about startin’ the seder already. “Beat It” is about our journey out of Egypt, before the sun or matzah can rise. “Smooth Criminal” becomes a song about “True Miracles,” in which the men of Six13 assure us that Elijah is OK.
And we end with some saccharine sweetness: “Man in the Mirror” turned into “Meaning of Maror,” a lovely reflection about the symbolic Passover foods on the seder plate.
I do hope I’m not “gonna eat this chrain for the rest of my life,” as they sing in the last line of the parody. Unlike this delightful parody that leaves us wanting more, there’s only so much of that grated horseradish I can handle!
