So I don’t know if you’ve heard about Jewniverse–it’s Kveller’s snarky first cousin, a daily email of a great band you’ve never heard of or a book you need to check out or a website that will consume entire weeks of your life instead of, say, going to the park with your kids.
Basically, all you really need to know is that it’s hella fun.
Anyway. We feature one thing every day, and it’s always different. Yesterday, we wrote about Jack Micheline, the Bronx Beat poet who’s being discovered by an awesome indie press in DUMBO, years after his death. Earlier this week, we did Katz’s Deli, which has a program called “Send a Salami to Your Boy in the Army.” (Yes, that’s literal.)
Tomorrow, we’re featuring Robyn Shippel and “Shabbat Rocks.” She’s an Atlanta-based singer/guitarist/punk/mom who created an album that’s exactly what it sounds like. Which is to say, loud, raucous covers of Shabbat songs, from “Bim Bam” to the blessings over challah and wine (er, grape juice).
So I kind of gave away the big surprise, right? Well, yeah. But here’s another reason you should subscribe: because tomorrow, we’ll be giving away a copy. Your kids will love it, they’ll start wearing little leather-jacket onesies and turn into punks–but, punks who know the words to Shabbat songs. And what could be better than that?
