It’s been two years since October 7, 2023 turned our world upside down.
It feels hard to make sense of the passage of time; the war is still raging, all the hostages are still not home, and even two years later, much of our grief from that day is still unseen.
To try to make sense of this moment, and to help you feel less alone, we are hosting a special Kveller event — A Virtual Sukkot Vigil — on Oct. 6, at 1 p.m. ET/10 a.m. PST with Rabbi Sari Laufer, Chief Engagement Officer at Stephen Wise Temple in Los Angeles.
The October 7 attacks took place after Sukkot ended — on the day of Simchat Torah. This year, October 7 falls on the first day of Sukkot, a holiday in which we sit in huts, in community — like our ancestors did on their way out of Egypt — under the stars. Since this holiday is all about being in community, and since this is a time we need it more than ever, it feels right to gather for a short service under a virtual sukkah of peace.
We’ll be mourning the victims, praying for the hostages to return and for an end to war and suffering, reading poems and reflecting on how Sukkot itself adds meaning to this moment. We’ll also take a pulse check to see how everyone is feeling and doing. This is a chance for us to be together and to feel seen.
Sign up here to join Kveller’s October 7 Virtual Sukkot Vigil. We hope to see you there.
