Whether you first learned about it from “The Nanny” or from your own bubbe, you might have witnessed the thrills of the rummy-based card game Canasta.
In fact, in one memorable episode about the nanny from Queens, called “Canasta Masta,” young Brighton Sheffield takes to the game like a duck to water, becoming a true master of Canasta the first time he plays the game. He’s so good that Fran Fine’s grandmother Yetta takes him under her wing to compete in a Canasta tournament in Atlantic City.
Unfortunately, for most people, learning the rules of Canasta and mastering its play isn’t quite as easy and immediate. It takes a little more time, and some expert help, to learn to play Canasta proficiently.
That’s where we come in. Last year, we had a four-part class to help you master another bubbe-beloved classic, mah jongg, and this year, we’re here to help you learn Canasta in a four-part virtual course that serves as an intro to the complex card game, taught by Dara Collins and Donna Miller-Small, authors of “Modern American Canasta: The Complete Guide.”
Over the course of four Sunday evenings between February 16 and March 9, Dara and Donna will take you through the basics and help you become a Canasta Masta, worthy of playing with Yetta and Fran.
