News Roundup: Parents Less Likely to Die Young

– Guess what? Parents are less likely to die young than childless people, according to a new study. Nobody knows why. (New York Times)

– The children’s advocacy group, The Annie E. Casey Foundation, said in a new report that record number of youths are unemployed and not in school. Oy. (Businessweek)

– The American Psychiatric Association’s new diagnostic manual, the DSM-5 is going to include an entry for “Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder,” a new diagnosis for kids 6 to 18 years old who three or more times a week have “temper outbursts that are grossly out or proportion in intensity or duration to the situation.” Um, isn’t that going to include most kids? – This may sound obvious, but apparently you should be talking to your kids, especially when they’re infants and toddlers. Studies show that speaking to kids, especially words spoken with kindness, improves academic success. (Philadelphia Enquirer)
