Songs from the Garden of Eden: Jewish Lullabies and Nursery Rhymes

Despite the word “lullaby” in the title, this album isn’t exactly the best music for bedtime. Its tracks range from softly percussive lullabies to raucous waltzes and bawdy dance numbers. But it is a tremendous treasure: a massive number of songs in English, Yiddish, Arabic, Judeo-Spanish (Ladino), and Hebrew in all varieties that kids’ ears can easily digest. Its version of the Yiddish lullaby “Dona, Dona” is light and sweet and sleepy. “Tchiko Ianiko,” a Ladino song about a “little bird,” is a fun tango–even if, instead of a complicated Spanish dance, you’re just hopping up and down. There are two versions of “Songs from the Garden of Eden”–a hardcover picture book with a CD in the back, and a standalone CD that includes a .pdf file of the book–so if you want to read along, make sure to pick up the book version.
