This popular lullaby by a beloved Polish Jewish poet killed in the Holocaust sounds a common theme in traditional Jewish culture–the wish for a son who will achieve worldly success while keeping up his Torah studies. The mother’s thoughts take a humorous turn when she realizes that she’s going to have to change a lot of diapers before Yankele achieves greatness: “A little boy who will be a learned Jewish scholar and a successful businessman/should be lying here, soaking wet?”
