You Never Heard of Sandy Koufax?! By Jonah Winter
This book isn’t just on this list because Sandy Koufax was a Jewish boy from Brooklyn, or because he experienced anti-Semitism, or because he refused to play ball on Yom Kippur. There’s something more, a kind of sacredness in the story of a person who challenges–and allows–his body to do what it was made to do (even though he was “supposed to be a doctor or a lawyer”). It’s also just an astoundingly pretty book.
