To get in the Hanukkah mindset — and illustrate the holiday’s focus on standing up for what’s right — the Yeshiva University male a capella group Y–Studs (short for Yeshiva Students!) covered Andra Day’s “Rise Up.”
The Y–Studs have said that they “hope to remind Jews across the world the relevance of the Hanukkah story in modern day.” This is a time, they added, that “we must stand up for our religious freedom, as the Maccabees did many years ago. We must rise up.”
The music video shows a college student facing anti-Semitism on campus, but ultimately refusing to let it ruin his Hanukkah celebration. Listen to the cover, which incorporates the Hanukkah classic “Rock of Ages,” below:
